William's Story Trail

The Horse Who Became a Heart Horse

William came to our family as a project horse for our teenage daughter. He was supposed to teach her, challenge her, and help her grow. Instead, he became her Heart Horse—a horse with whom she shared a bond that went far beyond riding.

William was a young, difficult colt when we brought him home. He struggled to understand boundaries and how to interact appropriately with other horses. At 16 hands tall, he seemed to think his size gave him permission to do whatever he wanted!

Learning to belong to a herd took time. With patience, William eventually learned the rules and found his place. Even after a serious illness and months away from his herd, he returned and quickly remembered where he belonged.

As William and our daughter grew together, they traveled, showed, attended clinics, and shared countless everyday adventures. Their connection became something special. Even after our daughter moved away, William recognized her voice when she called or FaceTimed. He would come over and listen, bringing her back to the years they had shared.

Eventually, William became a therapy horse at Natural Freedom. The horse who once struggled with boundaries became a teacher of them, helping people learn about communication, confidence, trust, patience, and respect.

William was also our barn’s lovable goofball. He loved stretching his long neck to reach apples from the trees and spending time with his best friend, Scoot. The two could often be found quietly grooming one another, showing the deep friendship they shared.

William came to us as a project horse for a teenage girl. He was meant to teach her—and he did. But along the way, she taught him, too.

Together, they learned about trust, patience, perseverance, friendship, and unconditional connection.

William was our daughter’s Heart Horse, our goofy giant, our therapy partner, and our beloved friend.

He didn’t simply grow up with our family. He grew with us.
