Pepper's Story Trail
From the Mountains of North Carolina to Natural Freedom
Pepper’s journey to Natural Freedom began in the mountains of North Carolina—and it was an adventure before she ever arrived.
She traveled north through a snowstorm, crossed the Canadian border, and even picked up a traveling companion along the way—a Hanoverian being shipped from Germany. When Pepper finally reached Ohio, the transporter’s rig was too large to pull into our driveway, so she had to be unloaded right on the road. Her journey had finally brought her home.
Pepper came to Natural Freedom as a 4-H pony for our then third-grade son. In North Carolina, she had been trained as a jumper, but together they discovered the fast-paced world of gymkhana, competing in events such as pole bending and barrel racing. They qualified for the Ohio State Fair in pole bending, though they needed to qualify in a second event to compete.
More importantly, Pepper became a trusted partner for a young boy with a big imagination. They enjoyed trail rides, games, and even a very creative attempt at safe, modified jousting with friends. Our son also dreamed of becoming a bull rider, and Pepper patiently played along. He would run her across the arena, then practice his imaginary bull-riding dismount.
At first, Pepper would stop and check on him. Eventually, she understood the game and learned to keep running. That was Pepper—she learned, adapted, and trusted.
From 4-H Pony to Therapy Horse
As part of his 4-H community service project, our son began preparing Pepper for therapeutic riding. A new therapeutic riding program in the area needed horses and ponies, and he knew Pepper could help.
Every evening, he worked with her using a borrowed wheelchair, leading Pepper up and down the driveway while he sat beside her. Neighbors often stopped to watch, wondering what was happening, but Pepper was learning an important lesson: wheelchairs were nothing to fear.
When their 4-H career ended, Pepper naturally transitioned into Natural Freedom’s developing equine-assisted therapy and learning program. She became one of our very first therapy horses.
Pepper, the Mother
Pepper’s gifts extended beyond helping people. When we adopted a nurse mare foal who was only three days old, Pepper immediately became her adopted mother.
She accepted the tiny foal without hesitation, providing the comfort, companionship, and security she needed.
A Pony Who Gave So Much
Pepper’s journey took her from a mountain pony in North Carolina to a beloved 4-H partner, therapy horse, and adoptive mother. Along the way, she became a trusted companion to a young boy and eventually touched the lives of countless people in our community.
Pepper was patient, versatile, trusting, and willing. She had a remarkable ability to meet people—and horses—where they were.
Before she became a therapy pony or a mother, she was simply our son’s pony. Her story began with the love of one little boy and grew into something much bigger.
Pepper gave pieces of herself to so many, becoming an important part of the story of Natural Freedom.
Her journey was long. Her heart was generous. And her impact was immeasurable.
