Finding Safety & Family
Meet Amicka
Their Hoofprints Remain
Amicka came to Natural Freedom as a tiny foal, just 3 days old. A baby horse is called a foal, and Amicka was a very special kind of foal—a nurse mare foal. Her mother was being used to provide milk for another mare’s foal, leaving Amicka without the care and companionship every newborn needs.
Amicka was scared and lonely, but she didn’t stay alone for long. Pepper quickly took her under her wing and became Amicka’s adopted Mom (mare). Pepper gave her the comfort, protection, and security she needed to grow.
Under this tree, Amicka met the rest of the herd for the very first time. Pepper stayed close by, carefully watching over her little foal. From that day forward, this tree became a place of safety and comfort for Amicka.
Amicka grew into a fun-loving, curious spirit who loved exploring the world with her lips. She was especially fascinated by coat zippers and could often be found grabbing one with her lips and moving it up and down! She was also an escape artis, known for unlatching her stall door and wandering the aisleway, visiting with the herd.
But Amicka’s greatest gift was the way she connected with people.
She played an important role in helping adopted children heal, grow, and navigate the difficult feelings that can come with losing their biological family. Through her gentle presence and unique personality, Amicka helped children discover that families can be built through love, trust, and connection.
Amicka’s story has touched so many lives that a storybook was written about her.
As you stand beneath this tree, remember little Amicka meeting her herd for the first time—with Pepper nearby, making sure she was safe.
Sometimes, one safe place and one loving friend are all we need to begin finding our way.
